If there's one thing that is better than a sunset photo, it's a sunrise photo. Better yet? A freezing cold sunrise - makes you appreciate it even more... plus, you don't have to contend with other photographers :)
Vietnam War Memorial Reflection
Funny story - I was supposed to move from DC to California on the day this photograph was taken. I suppose DC didn't want me to leave yet so it let loose the blizzard Jonas and brought the city to a close. My move was delayed by a week but at least I got this epic reflection photo at the Vietnam War Memorial. So much to read into this one - the black and white, the cold of the snow, the people looking at the wall of names claimed by the war and seeing their own reflection.
Supermoon Rising Over America's Finest City
This photo captures the supermoon rising behind a layer of clouds in San Diego, California. The hotels in downtown have hearts and the American flag to support the healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic
Trevi Fountain in Black and White
The Salvi fountain, er I mean Trevi fountain, is a staple in Rome. I made this photo at night in order to highlight the contrast of the scene. Black and white photography helps highlight that contrast - I love the texture of the water in the fountain, the texture of the stones on the wall, and added texture from the lights shining on the statutes. Oh, why did I say the Salvi fountain? Nicola Salvi actually designed this fountain back in 1732. Yep - I'm famous!
The Red Fort, or Lal Qila, in Delhi, India. This super pretty UNESCO world heritage site was commissioned in 1638 under Emperor Shah Jahan, the same emperor responsible for the Taj Mahal. You might be asking, “if it’s so pretty, why’d you make it black and white Ashwin?!?” Because black and white accentuates the architecture, the repeating pattern of the wall, and texture of the stones which might otherwise get lost with the color. I absolutely love this interpretation of such a beautiful structure. If you find yourself in Delhi, this is a pretty cool scene - as well as the India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Secretariat buildings (especially at night), and probably a thousand other places
We get so used to perceiving the world with our internal biases and experiences that sometimes we can miss something truly unique. Instead of looking at the sun as it set, I turned around to see what the light was shining onto. I've been waiting to capture this photo for a while now - I wanted the sunset light to bounce off the windows of the buildings in downtown San Diego and reflect off of the water. Sometimes, it does make sense to turn around.
